Introductory course to the world of algae

Algae are fascinating marine organisms that many people mistake for plants. They exhibit a wide range of intriguing adaptations and diverse forms, and an increasing number of applications for them are being developed. This course offers a general overview of the world of algae, designed for those with no prior background in biology.

The program includes in-person theoretical sessions, a snorkeling excursion to observe algae in their natural habitat, examination of specimens under a binocular microscope, and an algae-tasting experience at a local restaurant.

As people who love the sea, we naturally want to understand what we see beneath the surface. Seaweed comes in a fascinating variety of shapes, which often catches the eye; however, a lack of knowledge frequently leads people to mistake it for plants, corals, or even the rock itself.

This course offers an introduction to the world of seaweed: how it is classified, the different types, the most common species found in the Mediterranean, and how to identify them. We will also explore invasive species and their potential impacts, as well as the various uses for seaweed.

Given its growing potential in gastronomy, we will conclude the course with a seaweed tasting—prepared by the restaurant *El Molí dels Avis* in L’Ametlla de Mar—which is sure to be a delightful surprise.

As with all our courses, you will receive a certificate of attendance and a digital credential in your SSI digital logbook.

The training will be led by Dr. Simone Mariani, a marine ecologist from the University of Barcelona and an accomplished science communicator.
